What Are Invisalign® Aligners?

Invisalign® aligners are clear plastic aligners that are custom molded for your smile. Most patients wear about 20-30 sets of aligners during the course of their treatment, and each one will shift the teeth slightly, moving them into an ideal position.

The Benefits of Invisalign®

Invisalign® offers a wealth of benefits, but probably the most important is that Invisalign® clear aligners are virtually invisible while being worn. You can go about your daily routine with confidence, with your friends and coworkers never knowing that you are gradually transforming your smile. Here’s a closer look at some of the other notable benefits:

  • You’ll take your aligners out when you eat, so you can enjoy all the foods you love without worrying about getting anything stuck in your braces.
  • You can brush and floss your teeth as usual.
  • You won’t be held back by your Invisalign® aligners. You can be as active as you’d like during your treatment.
  • You won’t experience irritation from sharp wires or brackets like you might with traditional braces.
  • Invisalign® clear aligners can treat a wide range of orthodontic concerns, including underbites, overbites, crowding, gaps, and crooked teeth.

Maintenance and Care for Invisalign® Clear Braces

Caring for and cleaning Invisalign® aligners is relatively simple. Just remove the aligners when eating or drinking and keep them in their protective case when not in use. Brush and rinse the aligners with clear soap when you take them out to brush your teeth each day. Avoid using hot water and toothpaste, which can warp or scratch the aligners. For a deeper clean, soak the aligners in denture cleaning solution.

You should wear your Invisalign® aligners during sleep and for most of the day, taking them out only to eat, drink, and brush your teeth. You can drink water with your aligners in, but remove them when consuming any other beverages.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Invisalign® is a good option for both teens and adults in need of orthodontic care. While Invisalign® clear braces can treat most orthodontic issues effectively, they are not right for more complex cases. They are also not ideal if you cannot commit to wearing your aligners for 20-22 hours per day. For forgetful teens or busy adults, traditional braces may be a more effective alternative.

Pros and Cons of Invisalign® Clear Aligners

While Invisalign® offers many benefits, treatment also has some drawbacks. Here are the pros and cons to consider:

Pros

  • Invisible orthodontic treatment
  • More comfortable than traditional braces
  • Will not affect diet or oral hygiene routine

Cons

  • Ineffective if not worn often enough
  • More expensive than traditional braces
  • Aligners will need to be replaced at the patient’s expense if lost or damaged
  • Cannot fix all orthodontic issues

Invisalign® FAQs

Invisalign® treatment generally lasts about 12-18 months. During this time, you’ll need to wear your aligners for most of the day, removing them only to eat, drink, and brush your teeth—about 22 hours per day.

You’ll get a new set of aligners every 2-3 weeks. Each new set will feel tight at first, but they will gradually become more comfortable as your teeth move into place.

Invisalign® treatment costs anywhere from $3,000-$8,000 without insurance. Most dental insurance plans will provide coverage for Invisalign®, but orthodontic coverage is often limited. HSAs and payment plans can help to further reduce the cost of your care. To price out your treatment, contact our office today.
